Removing fork stanchions

Postby yumyum69 » Mon Mar 21, 2016 7:03 pm

Hi,
I am trying to dismantle my forks. I have removed the allen cap screw and the fork top nut and removed the spring etc.
How do I seperate the stanchion from the lower leg?
I have had the lower leg in a vice and tried yanking on the upper as per the manual instructions but to no avail.
Do I need to pull harder? (no tittering at the back please)

Many thanks

Andy

You need to make sure the oil seal circlip is removed, then pull them apart with a few sharp pulls. The lower bush taps against the upper, forcing it from it seating.

That has worked ,thanks.
The manual says that the seal and the two lower bushes should always be replaced.
I will definitely replace the oil seals but what are your opinions on the bushes?
Many thanks

Depends on their condition really. If they are worn with visible signs of wear, for example polishing of the actual bearing surfaces, then definitely replace them. Considering the cost (£100 for new bushes and seals) I'd say for peace of mind, replace them anyway.
