Engine won't start

Postby SteveJ » Sun Mar 13, 2016 4:39 pm

Chaps as some of you may know I fitted a new graham file engine at the last meet of last season I had to swap the stator to off my seized engine as the connectors were different and didn't have the right connectors at Snett.

Well I've fitted the file stator back on changed the connectors and now the bloody thing won't start.

I've been to put it on the dyno yesterday and spent all day trying to start it the only obvious thing we could find was the pick up coil shows a slight bit of heat damage on the one wire!

The plugs are sparking all be it not great and consistent the carbs are clean I've changed the plugs the fuel is getting through ok all electrical connections are ok and no signs of corrosion.

The bike is spitting and back firing but just will not start. We even put it on the dyno rolling rd to bump start it but nothing.

With Donny track day fast approaching this was the last thing I needed.

Can someone get In touch to help diagnose please ?

Thanks Steve #63

Steve, swap the two pick up coil wires round at the connector, sounds like you have them back to front.

change the pickup first imho. The wires are old and brittle and can break down internally.

post a pic of your pickup so we can see if it's OEM

You want to have all your electrics interchangeable so you can rob it off the spare motor quickly if needed.

Looked at Steve's no starty no likey problem the other night.
Every component measured good on the multi meter, yet there was no sign of a spark at the plug ! New pickup did not make any difference.

swapped out the stator for a known good one, and she fired up and ran smooth !

The old stator despite giving resistance figures within spec, was defunctomundo

I've had that myself Andy:

Lovely looking stator all clean and windings shiney, checked out on the static values spot on. Diddly squat, no spark whatsoever

Swopped for

Manky brown stator that looks like it's been under water for a fair while, static values closeish sort of, runs like a goodun
