The Re Build Part 3!

Posted by headling. No Comments

So had a good weekend on the bike, did a bit today, The LH exhaust went on ok at the weekend and got the RH one welded up a bit as I snapped this off at the Cadwell crash, it was welded track side by Bally and Garry ( thanks guys! ) and held up for the rest of the year but was blowing a bit so got it done by a mate at Mealham Metal Products in Ashford;

I shot up to K and S Racing ( my MX shop I use ) and got Gear oil, numbers, backgrounds and got some new Renthal Grips from Lagunas and put this on the venhill throttle.

I bought some blue valve caps too! What a tart but I did put grease on the thread as I have heard these can get stuck on the valves! (Kev Burton!!)

I set up the cables to the carbs and routed this over the top of the frame, I hope there is room betweek the tank and frame so this is free, I tried running the cable through the hole in the frame on the RH side but this didnt have a nice free action so went as direct as I could.

I still have quite a few bits to do, paint fairings, tank, seat unit, front mud gaurd.

Set up power valves and lots of other little bits and bobs! Then I have got to run the engine in, I am hoping to have it running by next weekend……….

Re-Build Part 2!

Posted by headling. No Comments

I managed to slip out to the work shop on Saturday for an afternoon before we went out for a meal, was really pleased with the progress from last night and felt good going to bed knowing I had got alot of the major bits done!

I know the race date is looming near (Moose keeps reminding everyone!) and I have my 30th Birthday pressie coming up, its a trip to New York!! Im going to stay at the Waldorf Estoria and watch the New York Nics play at Madison Square Gardens ( I am a basket ball player btw! ) so cant wait, but I get back from NY on Thursday 15th so really need to crack on and get bike all ready as I am a week down because of the trip.

I got the Bally wiring loom in and tried to get this is neat as possible:

mark tzr 013

Put the battery in and as you can see rear sets and gear linkage went on ok, nothing new there really:

mark tzr 010

Once I did this I went to put on some new stuff!! This is my favourite bit, as they are clean and shiney!!

This is my new rear braided rear brake line, I had a crappy rusty std rubber TZR one on it last season but called in a favour with FHS Motor Racing who are our distributor of the filters for the F1 industry and they knocked me this up, its very nice!! Aerospace quality dont you know!

mark tzr 001

I have just got to bleed it up! I hate doing this so if anyone has any tips let me know on the YPM forum!

I also got some new rear pads off ebay, dont know if they are any good but I dont tend to use the rear brake when I am racing so we shall see how these go!

mark tzr 003

The rear caliper is looking a bit crusty where the brake fluid has got to it, I may buy another caliper and get it powder coated or painted and replace this as it lets the bike down a bit ;-(

I then went onto have a look at my new Venhill quick action throttle! Kev Higgerty got a few of these for the club at a good price and it seems really well made and came with all the cables and an alloy splitter for the carbs.

This should help out when racing as the STD tzr throttle took a good wind round to get it fully open! I just hope its not too sensative as I dont want a high side when I crack the power on out of a corner, I will see how I get on, my MX bikes has this style of throttle so I should be ok!

mark tzr 005

I am yet to fit the cables to the carbs etc and figure out a cable run.

On a side note I dropped my leathers off to Mojo Leather in Canterbury, they are on the case with the elbow repair and will have them done shortly, they seem a really nice bunch of people of you need yours done!

The carbon clock surrownd and chain gaurd are coming along ok and I should have some pics soon on this, I am sure carbon fibre bits give you a few more BHP!! I love the stuff!!

The real work starts!!

Posted by headling. No Comments

Right had a good weekend on the bike, got lots done on it.

I picked up the frame from powder coating, looks really good, I was wise and stuck old bolts in all the frame threads ( I made this mistake on my Hejera!) so the re build was fairly painless!

I started on Friday night at 8 and went through till 11.30 and got alot done as you can see in the pics, rolling chassis done and engine in!

I spent a fair bit of time cleaning all the components up and putting in new nuts bolts etc , its no up to Yats standards but I am happy with it so far!

Here is a pic of the new rear seat stay I had welded on, should support my small bottom this season ok!

mark tzr 012

As you can see the quality of the powder coating is really good, the bloke at Big Dog Powder Coating did it for £70 cash so not to bad I thought!!

I didnt take too many pics of the re-build as I got stuck in and forgot!

So this is what I did in 3.5 hours on friday night, this was from bare frame:

mark tzr 009

It was a bit of a battle getting the engine in on my own but with using my knees etc just about managed!

I then got the RGV rad plumbed in and gave it a bit of a clean up and polish and some nice blue bolts! ( I know I am a tart! )

I got the coil in:

Thats about it for Fridays fun and games!

Odds and Sods

Posted by headling. No Comments

Still got a new little bits to do this week, I have my leather to drop in for repair after the Cadwell crash, I have a bit of a hole in the elbow that needs a patch up.

I have also got some nice Carbon Fibre to have a play with! I am making a new rev counter surround and a chain gaurd, It wont make me go any faster but it looks pretty!

TW Fuggles have offered me and Tom sponsership again this season on the tyres which is a great help to us! Thanks Crispin if you read this! On a side note his Kenny Roberts RD is in MCN this week, very nice!

Here is the link to the beast!!

Frame / engine Work

Posted by headling. No Comments

I have also done some work on the frame, I have had a new seat mount welded to the frame and dropped it in for powder coating in gloss black.

I hope to have this back next week and start the rolling chassis re-build!

Engine Work-

I dropped my engine off up to Dave Gardners house for Small Paul to put the top end back together.

Thanks to Fish for the Mikita pistons etc, got the gastkets from Laguna Motor Cycles in Maidstone, it was only £38 for the top end gaskets and power valve seals, all genuine Yamaha so quite happy with that!

Small Paul put it all back together last Wednesday so its ready for running in!

Pics of Daves lovely Norton and F2 Kawasaki

I also got some new bits for the bike, Kev Higgerty has got me a shiny Venhill quick action throttle with cables so this will be going on shortly! Thanks for that mate!

New rear pads and got some new fronts on order from Marcus from EBC, I am planning to get a EBC Pro Lite disk on order soon.

Body Work Time!

Posted by headling. No Comments

It has been an age since I have been on here with any updates, I have been doing a few bits and bobs on the bike but should have dont a bit more!!

Moose posted on the forum its only 6 weeks till Oulton so I had better get a shift on and had a good week doing some jobs!

Right over xmas I have been doing some body work, I got a new fairing from ebay and this has been painted and is ready for collection and today I finished off the seat unit, tank ( sorry bally the famous paddock hill crash dent is no longer in the tank!)

You can see a nice bit of filler was needed! the seat unit just needed a tidy up and the odd bit of filler, these are being painted by my brother in law this week.

Engine Work

Posted by headling. No Comments

Xmas was good, got lots of nice stuff and some bits for racing next year, new sockets, back protector and most important a new sleeping bag! So hopefully this year I wont freeze at night!

Well I finally got into the workshop today and did a bit more on the bike.

This morning I went over to Neil Allens to pick up my Transponder, gave it a charge up and changed my transponder bracket for this type of transponder to fit.

Todays aim was engine strip down:

First of all I took the carbs apart and gave them a good clean up, removed the jets and blasted them out with carb cleaner, I should have done this earlier on but they were not gummed up.

Next was getting the top end apart to take the pistons out and see what size they were so I could order some more up from Pete Fishwick, some pics below, seemed in really good nick seeing as it did a seaons racing and practice days.

barrell barrell
piston piston

I found out on inspection that it had 1.00mm over bore pistons fitted, the barrells seemed fine with no signs of wear or scores, so hopefully it will be a case of fitting new pistons and gaskets and power valve seals and it should be good for another 4-5 meetings.

ypm 6 006

It looks bad sat with the hammer there, trust me I didnt use it!!

Next on the list of things to do is:

Order up gaskets etc and put engine back together

Carry on with tank, seat unit, front mudgaurd prep for paint

Trim out ebay fairing and prepare for paint

Get the frame seat stay modified and send of for power coat

The Strip Down!

Posted by headling. No Comments

Dec 5th:  The strip down!!

Well I had the day off yesterday and I am starting my TZR winter re-build, I thought I would do a sort of Project step by step on here, so far as you can see its in alot of bits! Just getting the frame etc ready for paint/powder coating.

The only mods so far are grinding off the rear foot rest mounts off the frame to clean it up, loads to do…..Watch this space!

the project begins!

the project begins!

If you have any constructive comments then please feel free!

Dec 12th-13th:

I won a new fairing on ebay, needs a bit of trimming etc so I have dropped this is of at a mates business ( Curley Composites ) for trimming, filling and primer then it will be ready for paint!

I went to Jules brothers Russells who has a body shop and DA the seat unit, front mudgaurd and the famous Bally tank that has some good dents in it from his crash at Brands Paddock Hill Bend, shame to make it look neat as its got some history, time for me to dent it me thinks at some point!!

18th Dec:

I did some work on the frame and tidied up the rear foot rest mounts after I ground these off, Toms bike has this done and looks alot neater:

frame mods

frame mods

The frame is ready for powder coating now, just going for gloss black me thinks!

As for the swing arm, not sure as this is Ali, paint maybe better….

frame ready for paint/p-coat

frame ready for paint/p-coat

I also went to Park Leisure today, they make skate ramps and slides etc for parks and they do powder coating too for general items, as you can see in the picture, I have had the engine cradle, engine stay and spring done, they ook really good, shame you wont see them that much but atleast I know they look nice! ;-)

bits from powder coating

I am off for a pint later with our new sponsor for 2009/10 season, The Bull Pub in Bethersden: Tom has the graphics ready for my bike and is running them on his at the moment, just need to collect the dosh for 2010! Dont get too jealous its only enough for a few sets of tyres but it all helps!

ypm re-build 001

I have bought myself a Transponder at last, thanks to Higgsy for putting me on to it, Neil Allen needs more beer money for uni so wanted to sell it, I am well pleased as £25 a pop from Bemsee adds to the weekends expenses!

The one I have bought used to belong to a certain Shakey Burn so on mylaps it must seem funny him riding a TZR!! I am sure Ducati would laugh if they saw the lap times!!

I am doing some body work this weekend so out with the P38 filler! I’ll post some pics next week………
